In August of 2024 the dune vegetation on the east side of the San Juan neighborhood beach access was cleared on Walton County property from the edge of the parking lot to seaward of the Coastal Control Construction Line.  Beach code compliance and the Walton County Sheriff's office were called to respond to this unauthorized activity.  Since sensitive dune plants were removed Walton County contacted the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to obtain permits and approval for plans to restore the area.
